We wanted a school app that fits. So we built one.

Two websites, no overview.

Our school had two sites: WebUntis for the timetable, tests and absences, and a second one just for grades. Both did their job and nothing more. Anyone who wanted to know what was on tomorrow and how they were doing in maths had to switch between them, and on a phone it was worse.

What was missing

Four things bothered us most.

• Neither of them was nice to use.

  Grey tables, tiny text, barely usable on a phone. We wanted an app you like to open: clear, fast and easy on the eyes at night.

• Nobody reminded you about the test.

  Test tomorrow, and half the class didn’t know. Reminders in POKYH show up for everyone at the same time, and everyone can comment.

• You had to work out your average yourself.

  Which grade do I still need to pass? There was only paper and a calculator. Now your average is there for every subject, with a trend and a calculator for the next test.

• The cafeteria wasn’t online.

  What was for lunch couldn’t be found anywhere online. Now the menu sits next to your timetable, with photos, allergens and stars from classmates.

And we were bored.

So we got started, with no assignment and no company behind it, over a lot of evenings after school. First for ourselves, then for our class and our school, and today for every school on WebUntis: one app that puts everything in one place, and looks good doing it.

What came of it

Every feature has a concrete reason.

• Timetable

  Which lesson, when, with whom, in which room. Substitutions and cancellations stand out right away.

• Grades and average

  All your grades in one place instead of on a separate website: the average per subject, a trend and a calculator that shows what you still need.

• Cafeteria

  The menu is always at hand, with ingredients, nutrition facts and ratings from classmates.

• Messages

  Read and answer messages from teachers and open attachments, all in one tidy inbox.

• Absences in hours and percent

  How many hours have you actually missed? The overview shows them month by month, excused and open, and the share of your lesson time in percent. Calculated from your timetable as a help; your school’s records remain authoritative.

• Class reminders

  One reminder for the whole class that shows up for everyone right away, with comments.

• To-dos

  A personal list where everything else is, the same on all your devices.

And it keeps going.
