How to calculate absences in percent

Divide your hours missed by all hours of the school year and multiply by 100. If you do not know the yearly hours, multiply weekly hours by school weeks.

Example32 hours a week for 33 weeks make 1056 hours. With 120 hours missed you are at 11.4 %. With a 25 % limit (264 hours) you have 144 hours left.

The three-quarter rule in Italy

At middle and upper secondary schools in Italy, the school year only counts if you attended at least three quarters of your personal yearly timetable. So you may miss at most a quarter, 25 %. All subjects count together, not each subject on its own. For justified and documented cases, such as a long illness, every school sets its own exceptions. Whoever goes over the limit without an exception is not assessed and does not move up.

Legal basis: DPR no. 122/2009, art. 14(7) (upper secondary), Legislative Decree no. 62/2017, art. 5 (lower secondary), in South Tyrol also Provincial Law no. 11/2010. How your school counts and which exceptions it accepts is in its school rules.

In other countries

Germany, Austria and Switzerland have no single percentage limit. The rules depend on the state, canton or school, often with consequences only once a grade can no longer be given. Set the limit in the calculator to your school’s value.
