How to calculate your grade average
Add up all grades and divide by how many there are. 6, 7 and 8 give (6 + 7 + 8) / 3 = 7.
Weighted average
If a written test counts twice as much as an oral grade, multiply it by two and divide by the sum of the weights. How much each grade counts is up to the teacher or the school.
ExampleOral 7 (weight 1) and test 5 (weight 2): (7 × 1 + 5 × 2) / 3 = 5.67. To reach 6 you need at least 6.5 in the next test (weight 2).
Grading scales at a glance
The calculator knows the common scales. Half grades and signs like + or - are converted differently from school to school; choose above what they are worth at yours.
- Italy, including South Tyrol: 1 to 10, 10 is the best grade, 6 and above is a pass.
- Germany: 1 to 6, 1 is the best grade, up to 4 (ausreichend) is a pass.
- Germany, upper years: 0 to 15 points, 5 points and above is a pass.
- Austria: 1 (Sehr gut) to 5 (Nicht genügend), up to 4 (Genügend) is a pass.
- Switzerland: 1 to 6, 6 is the best grade, 4 and above is a pass.
Questions
How do I calculate my grade average?
Add up all grades and divide by their number. If grades have different weights, multiply each grade by its weight and divide by the sum of the weights. The calculator above does both.
What is a 6+ or a 6/7 as a number?
Your school decides. Often a plus adds 0.25 and a minus takes 0.25 away; a 6/7 sits right in between, at 6.5. In the calculator you set what + and - are worth at your school.
Which grade do I need for a certain average?
Enter the grades you have and your target average. The calculator shows the lowest grade you need in the next test and tells you when one test is no longer enough.
Is the calculated average my report grade?
Not necessarily. Report grades also reflect participation, progress and the teacher’s judgement. The average is a good guide; the class conference decides.
